How I Organize and Store My Jewelry

Starting 2019 with a very exciting post…how I organize and store my jewelry. Ok, so it’s not that thrilling, but this is something that I’ve been meaning to share for a while. What started at as a simple post turned into me pulling out all of my jewelry, sorting through it, and reorganizing every single piece. It was much needed though!

I have a lot of costume jewelry, gaudy/loud pieces that are cheap, and a pretty good collection of Kendra Scott and other statement pieces. Some of my earrings have been hiding in the bottom of the pile for a few years and needed to go in order to make room for the new. When I get rid of clothes and accessories I like to send it to Thredup for consignment. Yes, Thredup accepts jewelry! So that is where my old pieces go. I just started posting items on Poshmark, but I didn’t feel like the earrings and necklaces I was getting rid of would sell.

My Gran always says, “If you think you have enough on, put on one more,” and I take that seriously. So you can imagine what my jewelry collection looks like. When I was little my mom kept all of my earrings in fish tackle boxes…genius right?! The small sections were perfect for keeping pairs together and made it easy to look at all of my options. I would keep the boxes underneath my vanity.

These days I store my jewelry a little differently. I have now graduated from tackle boxes to a more sophisticated sectioned tray organizer. You can find these organizers at Marshall’s or Homegoods, and they’ll run you about $8 to $15 (I’m guessing, could be more or less). If you want to be even fancier, The Container Store has nice velvet lined trays or pretty acrylic ones. I use three large trays.

How you separate your jewelry in the trays is totally up to you, but I’m a hair OCD and like to keep like colors together. The clothes hanging in my closet may or may not be organized in the same manner. This makes the most sense to me because I choose my earrings and bracelets based on color (don’t most people?). I have a lot of turquoise, and burnt orange that get their own special section. You’ll see quite a bit of white, gold, and black jewelry as well. I don’t get too wild with colors. You have probably noticed in my blog photos that I stick with a handful of favorites.

These trays stack perfectly in the top drawer of my dresser. When you have this much, it deserves an entire drawer! Typically the top drawer of a dresser is pretty shallow, and shoved full of socks and undies. Sorry panties, you’ve been demoted. I cleaned out my drawer in order to give you a better idea of how the trays fit inside of it, but typically I have sunglasses and jewelry cleaning cloths in between the trays. Everything stays put fairly well, so I do not worry about sunglasses getting scratched or any of the trays dumping out.
