Native Deodorant Review

Instagram advertising works, because it convinced me to try natural deodorant for the first time. I have been using it for just over a week now, and I want to share my experience so far.

I have seen some bloggers that I follow share pics and blog posts of their experience trying natural deodorant, so I was interested in what all of the hype was about. My best friend, Jessica, had sent me a text asking if I had tried this natural deodorant yet (she had also been seeing it all over Instagram). I told her no, but I was definitely interested! So I read a little bit of Katey McFarland’s blog about using natural deodorant for a year. I’ll be honest, pregnancy has shortened my attention span, so I only read a little bit of it. Then I saw this infographic and decided to take the plunge and try it.

For the record, I am not one for holistic health, and I don’t actually follow that account. However, there is a history of breast cancer in my family. I wanted to check the validity of this information so I did a little more research on the link between aluminum in antiperspirant and cancer. The American Cancer Society claims “there are no strong epidemiological studies in the medical literature that link breast cancer risk and antiperspirant use.” Read more here.

The first time I used it I applied the deodorant in the evening after a shower. The next morning before work I forgot to reapply, and I went along with my day as usual. By the time I got home from work at 5:00 pm I was pretty impressed. I could tell it wore off a little but I wasn’t stinky.

The next day was a different story. I applied the deodorant in the morning, like usual. It was another regular day of work, sitting in an air conditioned office. On my lunch break I ran home and did some speed cleaning. Around 4:00 pm I touched my armpit and sniffed my finger (because I’m only human) and it smelled like body odor. I didn’t give up on it though.

This Saturday we went to the Texas versus Baylor game and it was a scorcher. We were sitting in the sun during the entire game and my body was sweating. I was definitely stinky by the end of the game, but not near as bad as it would have been wearing zero deodorant. I really put this natural deodorant to the test in my first week of trying it.

Overall, I’m glad I am making the switch. My local Target had three different scents by Native and I think the Coconut & Vanilla smelled the best. The Lavender & Rose reminded me of bed time (lavender oil), and the Jasmine & Cedar didn’t smell like much of anything to me. I plan on using this stick until it runs out…considering it cost me $12. I’ll be sure to write a follow up post in the future!

If you use natural deodorant please share in the comments! I’d love to know what works/does work for you, which brand you like best, and what made you make the switch.

UPDATE

I used Native for an entire month and finally gave up on it. I was consistently smelling like body odor by the end of the day. Granted, I was pregnant at the time, but I was not overly active and spent over 8 hours of my day inside. My final thoughts: not a good deodorant.
