My Trip To Chicago

June 20, 2017 3 Comments

It took me a hot minute, but I’m finally sharing my trip to Chicago! Milton and I planned this trip with his best man, Dylan, and his girlfriend, Courtney. Actually, Dylan and Courtney did all of the planning. We just showed up. The kicker about all of this…two weeks before the trip my best friend’s boyfriend called me to let me know he was going to be proposing…and it just happened to fall on the Saturday we’d be in Chicago. I was absolutely beside myself over missing it! We had a wonderful time in Chitown though!

Thursday

Thursday afternoon we flew into Midway around 4:30 pm, and holy hell it took an hour to drive nine miles to our Airbnb. We stayed in the Gold coast area in the cutest apartment building on North Lasalle street.

We got deep dish pizza from Lu Malnati’s. Milton brought it back, and it was only a 10-inch pizza. I was sure that wasn’t going to be enough for both of us because I can eat a pizza of that size on my own. It was sooo good and sooo filling.

Then we went to Thalia Hall to see Robert Earl Keen (yes, we went all the way to Chicago and saw a Texas artist). Thalia hall was built in 1892 and has some beautiful architectural details inside. I wasn’t able to get pictures because the security guys were sticklers about taking photos at the concert…which I can respect because we live through our cameras a little too often these days. It was a very intimate venue, and such a cool place to hear my favorite REK songs.

After the concert we headed to Three Dots and a Dash for a little late night grub and over-the-top drinks. Super cool vibes, but a little pricey as far as cocktails go, but maybe that’s just Chicago. I’m used to drinking $4 beers on rainey street in Austin haha. This bar is kind of underground and had awesome vibes.

Friday

The next morning we woke up and got ready for the Cubs game! Before heading to Wrigley we had brunch at Hashbrowns Cafe. They have the yummiest sweet potato hash browns (go figure lol).

I have grown up going to watch the Texas Rangers play in Arlington, TX, so when I first walked into Wrigley field it felt so small! I loved that the game felt more intimate though. There wasn’t a bad seat in the house. In fact, there were even seats on top of bars across the street! I thought that was so neat! …haha I’m a poet and I didn’t even know it.

After the cubs game we stopped at Shaw’s Oyster Bar for a little snack. I’m not real big on oysters, but they had some other seafood appetizers that were to die for.

Once our bellies were full we met up with a friend that lives in town and has the coolest rooftop patio! There was an amazing view of the city up there so I had sweet Milton snap some shots of me.

Saturday

Brunch at Sophie’s inside of Saks Fifth Avenue. They had an amazing Prosecco on the menu that was almost too easy to drink. Unfortunately, I don’t remember which one it was…not my best blogger moment.

Took a cab to Millennium park and it just happened to be Blues Fest! We enjoyed the free tunes with some drinks, and of course, took some photos at the bean.

Then we headed to the architecture boat tour we had previously scheduled. We headed to Navy Pier to find out that was NOT where our boat was departing. We hopped in a cab and got as close to the other dock as possible. Somehow we made it in time! The company was so nice and patient with us and let us on the boat just moments before it left.

Later that evening we enjoyed dinner at Gibson’s Steakhouse with some interesting views beforehand. We watched the annual naked bike ride down the street in front of the restaurant. The food was simply amazing. I think it was the best steak I have ever had, and that’s saying a lot coming from this Texas gal. You can bring in your own bottle of wine for a corking fee of $25. There was a wedding reception going on upstairs. I tried to talk my friends into crashing it but they weren’t down. Probably a good thing.

Would I go back to Chicago? Of course! However, Milton and I want to make it to as many different destinations as possible while we’re young. Any suggestions on where we should go next?

I love Chicago! Sounds like you had a great weekend. New York City, San Francisco, and Denver would be my recommendations of places close by.
