Why You Should be Taking Advantage of Your Lunch Break

My generation is full of young women with drive and passion to succeed.  So many of us work over 40 hours a week, building relationships with clients, perfecting projects, and doing whatever it takes to make our stamp on today’s world.  While this kind of work ethic is extremely admirable, it is also a little bit exhausting. I want to remind you to take a break!

You may think working through your lunch break is the right thing to do if your work load is heavier than normal or you’re trying to impress a new boss.  Think again. Taking a break allows you to reset and recharge, allowing for more productivity when you return to your desk. There’s even studies that have proven it. Science ya’ll! You can’t argue with science (unless you’re a scientist I guess).

If you’ve read my recent exercise diary you know that I take advantage of my lunch break by working out at the office gym, but recently I have been using that time in a different way. For the past week I have gone home to have lunch at my kitchen table.  At first, the cats were a little surprised to see me in the middle of the day, but now they’re getting used to it.

Increase your productivity!

I’m able to take care of some errands that can be accomplished online (car registration and toll bills, yuck). Yes, it is like a tease to come home only to have to go back to work. However, I feel like I am able to actually relax and disconnect from the stress of work for a solid 45 minutes.  I go back to work in a great mood, and my productivity is so much higher than it would be otherwise.

I realize most people do not have the convenience of whipping home for a full lunch break, but there are so many other ways you can utilize that time.  If the weather allows, take a walk outside of your building.  The simple act of breathing fresh air can do wonders for your well-being.  If there is a park nearby take advantage of it!  Keep a book in your car or even scroll through Instagram on a park bench.  Most importantly, allow yourself to disconnect from work. You’ll be glad you did it.

Hi Caitlin! Loved this post about taking advantage of lunch breaks. I recently started a new job a few months ago and was really impressed by everyone’s lunch time activities. Many of my colleagues have a bite to eat and then take a walk. And now that it’s summer, there’s the odd Bocce game as well! I’m a huge advocate for taking breaks so this was a great read and a great reminder. xo Kate
